Our currency is the G-Cube. Help us to support a sustainable and long-term waste management solution.
G-Cubes is a conceptual art project, which concerns itself with the subject of daily waste production and disposal. Through the return of the waste to the waste producer, we want to achieve wider awareness of this problem. By removing the garbage from an original context and into its conservation in the new form of a G-Cube, the trash is compressed into art and becomes a sculpture. Each G-Cube removes trash from a different location and this place will be photographically recorded.
G-Cubes and photo belong together. In the end the combination of the collected G-Cubes will stand as one big cube out of many small ones. The photographs tell the story of the individual G-Cubes and show the waste in its original context.
G-Cubes takes on the risky balancing act between art and economy. The project also raises questions about the contemporary art market. Through production, distribution and selling of the G-Cubes around the world, we’re not only going to create a picture during 15 months of sailing but also a value: The “Currency G-Cube”.
Washed up garbage will be collected and compressed into a cube using a mobile compactor. The crude waste, cube will be conserved, by casting it into a cube of resin. The result being a G-Cube (g = garbage), which is classified and catalogued by an engraved plaque which is cast together with the cube. Each G-Cube is a handmade, unique item.
On our way we will produce and offer 400 cubes for sale during the 15 months of sailing. 1000 cubes will be compressed and sent back to Switzerland for the final exhibition and casting into resin cubes.
Through the circumnavigation of the earth on a sailing vessel, we will on one hand create a metaphor for the globalised waste problem and on the other, we can expand our network on local level. The aim is, at the end, to have a number of supporting galleries around the world, with whom G-Cubes can work together in the long term.
Project accompaniment by Bern gallery
The Gallery Duflon Racz will accompany the project throughout the duration of the circumnavigation. There are 7 prolonged weekends planned (every two months) on which exhibitions in connection with the project will be organised. These will contain the presentation of pictures and the screening of new film material. It will also be possible to participate in G-Cubes actions via Skype. This is how we will create a platform where interested people, partners and staff members of the project can exchange information.
The concept of the mobile gallery allows us performances and exhibitions outside of the traditional gallery scene. We create the possibility to exhibit and craft G-Cubes exactly where the waste is washed up. Thus, we achieve global awareness and a close collaboration with the local population, who, under normal circumstances, would not be in a position to address the waste problem.
In constructing the large cube out of many smaller ones, we create a memorial. We bring the waste back to its origins, back to the city. The final exhibition is planned as a travelling one. The exhibition will include: G-Cubes, the photo documentation of the sites and a documentary film of the entire project.
